What is Leadership? An
effective gauge of a community’s health and well being is the volunteer
and civic contributions made by its leaders…those people who serve
on boards and commissions, work with community groups, and serve as elected
officials. These citizen leaders must be nurtured and provided with tools
that enable them to be successful and inspires their commitment to community.
The Mohawk Valley’s future depends on a sustainable and renewable
source for leadership. This is the role and responsibility of Leadership
Mohawk Valley.
What is Leadership Mohawk Valley? For
one day a month, participants meet to learn in-depth and hands-on
about vital aspects of the regional community. We are a resource
from which civic, cultural, philanthropic and other organizations
draw their leaders, and from which progressive businesses can identify
managers able to utilize regional infrastructures. We are an incubator
for community issues awareness, leadership skills and networking.
The program analyzes major areas of community concern, provides opportunities
for open dialogue between leaders with diverse perspectives, examines leadership
styles, and promotes a network of community trustees committed to the greater
good. All programs are planned and delivered by teams of LMV graduates who each
bring their special expertise to the issues being explored.
How Does LMV Work? A
class of approximately 30 participants is selected annually. It is
composed of an accomplished group of men and women who reflect the
diversity of the Mohawk Valley region. LMV is a highly structured
10-month program that follows the schedule of a typical school year.
The year begins in September with a one and a half day Orientation.
From October through June, participants attend monthly, daylong focused
programs designed to give them exposure and perspective in a variety
of areas. All sessions are designed to be highly interactive, educational
and thought provoking. Participants share their unique experiences
and learn from one another.
Throughout the year, the participants are also teamed with fellow members in
smaller project groups to gain practical experience in working together.
When Can I Apply? Applications
are accepted year with a deadline
of August 31for the upcoming program year (Sept-June).
What is the Cost? Tuition
is $1,500 and a limited number of partial scholarships are granted
to those who qualify for assistance.

The History of LMV
Leadership Mohawk Valley (LMV) was created in 1990
as a joint effort of the Herkimer, Utica, Rome Chambers of Commerce
and area business
leaders. Representing the Chambers were Ted Adams, Al Mardon & Bob Van
Slyke. The founding Board Members of LMV were Debra Altdoeffer, Douglas
Brewer, Richard Collins, Carolyn Dalton, Keith Heinrich, David Harvey,
Carol Jubenville, Richard Kaleba, Julius Perillo, Charles Sprock, Ronald
Williams
and John Winske.
LMV “Develops Leaders
Dedicated to our Community’s Growth and Excellence”.
LMV has been successful because a sense of urgency to develop future
leaders in the community was created 14 years ago. The 10-month leadership
program
develops a knowledgeable group of people prepared to be leaders in
the community and to shape its future. It also provides experience
in group
dynamics,
team leadership, presentation skills and professional and personal
growth. The “awareness and engagement” focus of the LMV program has
produced nearly 400 graduates from the region between Little Falls and
Rome.Leadership
Mohawk Valley and Community TrusteeshipLMV incorporates the philosophy
of Community Trusteeship in its program curriculum. Simply stated, Community
Trusteeship views our community as a gift or inheritance from past generations
and recognizes those who held the community in trust. Throughout the LMV
program year, participants broaden their perspectives, and confront the
issues at large, thereby gaining a clearer picture of the community,
as it exists today.
Ultimately, the program concludes by serving as a springboard for the
participant’s
future community leadership efforts. As clearly as we have received our
inheritance, very soon, we will be leaving our legacy for the generations
that follow. LMV is a valuable asset towards achieving our preferred future.
